What makes a good blogger?

by tylluanpenry @ Saturday, 26. Apr, 2008 - 12:16:00

I was just wondering what you consider makes a good blogger. Is it daily posts? Or always being polite? Maybe you feel a good blogger can argue a point without winding people up!

For me, I do value courtesy. Even if we have to agree to disagree, there's no need to make it personal. I also value bloggers who take the time and trouble to reply to comments (and I know I'm sometimes guilty of not doing this, so mea culpa).

All in all I feel I've made some wonderful friends in Blogland - and seen and benefitted from unstinting support and encouragement. What do you feel?

I feel the same Ty and have to admit to having been slightly naughty with replies to comments recently but that is only because I had a major issue with blog and then I had a major down time with my website which has been taking up all of my week and still is on going so will catch up soon I hope with everyone... oh and of course there was the major issues with family! Gawd and bennet, I hope this week is calmer! Whether or not we all have differing view points there is no excuse for rudeness, if someine disagrees then that's fine but putting a point across in a polite and courteous way is not difficult...

I quite understand, blogging has been very difficult lately for me too

I think courtesy is important in blogland if you want to foster a sense of community. I don't mean we all have to agree, just put the point across without resorting to insults!

I think a good blogger is one who holds my interest. It all depends on what kind of blogging platform you are looking for. If it is community like we have here then a social blogger is what you might enjoy. If you are blogging to write I don't think daily posts are necessary. It is nice to comment though I'm guilty of getting too busy to do so. I'm trying to be better about that. WP on the other hand is a more professional blogging platform and you get a bit less of the social structure. I do enjoy both and blog differently on each for the most part. I think courtesy is a good thing. I left all forums due to general bad behavior.

I agree, the social aspect of blogging is very important. I've never wanted to blog just to tell people what I think... it has to be a two way process!

This can be a fantastic environment and there are some really wonderful people here... Blogland has been a lifeline for me over the last year... I digress somewhat.

For me a good blogger is someone with something interesting to contribute, whether that be via their own blog posts, or comments made on other blogs.

I agree with regards courtesy... there's no need for nastiness when making an argument... this isn't a primary school playground, the Big Brother house, or the House of Commons...

I so agree, Usky! Imagine blogging in the House of Commons! ;)

Yours is certainly a very interesting blog and I always look forward to your posts.

You could entitle a HoC blog Taking Over The Asylum couldn't you... :))

I agree with you. You don't have to be rude even if you don't share an opinion, do you? I try to comment on the blogs I read if I have something to say, as I value comments a great deal myself.

Sometimes I just don't know what to say (as with some of your posts, I must confess, as I don't always understand them :) ) and then I might not comment, but I can still enjoy reading.

I read many different kind of blogs and have no real answer to what makes a good blogger. I do think it is important to take an interest in the visitors comments though. I have left comments in blogs, where I have always been totally ignored, and that is not very nice.

You're quite right - there's no need for people to be rude even when they disagree. In fact you can get some really good arguments provided it never gets to be personal insults!

Like you, I try to read many different kind of blogs!

It depends what we want from blogs we read. I'm not a stickler for grammar and spelling but I do like coherent writing and well thought out points.

As I use a lot of American blogs where I clash with religious fundamentalists I'm used to death threats, so the odd bad tempered comment does not bother me. I just reply in kind.

Death threats! Good grief - you must be a brave blogger to deal with stuff like that!

I think one thing that does annoy me is when people use 'text-speak' to write and I have to sit there and wonder what it is they're saying. Fortunately, I don't think that's ever happened here....:)

Respect and courtesy to me are important no matter who we are dealing with in life ... to all things both living and otherwise.

I do believe we have to understand that people's lives are very busy these days. So some days we have time to blog or to respond and some days we don't... and that's okay too.

For me it is finding a place where I can connect with like-minded folks who are warm and supportive even if we have different points of view ... that helps me to grow!

I'm thrilled to be a part of such awesome people around the globe! What is a community? I live too far from a community to be involved in it ... so I get that from my blogland community. I don't do negative gossip of any kind and this so much better for me and my fundamental beliefs!

I agree that some days it's easier to blog than others. I try to have a real blitz on my blogging at least every other day so that I don't fall too far behind. And it's easier to avoid negative gossip in blogland than over the garden fence!

Absolutely - and if I really didn't enjoy the content of any particular blog, then I would avoid it. What does surprise me are those bloggers (and visitors) who seem to be spoiling for a fight. I always appreciate the way you reply to all comments on your blog!

I think a good blogger is in the eye of the reader.

It depends what you want to get out of blogging really.

I have noticed that most people have lots of people with different blogging styles on their friends list as in life they may have a group of friends with very different personalities and interests. So I think a lot depends on your mood at the time.

BUT politeness and consideration are valuable attributes in anybody.

All good points, QM. I think reading many different blogs is enriching - and agree that politeness and consideration are very important.

I think a good blogger is someone who will read your posts objectively and be courteous in their comments. I think they also have the ability to not only inform but entertain. Blog friends are very understanding of the committments of life and don't take offence if comments are not always forth coming.
I have some excellent blog friends of which you are one of the most valued

Respect is always good.

What is a good blogger , though ? I'm sure I don't know. There are so many different kinds of blogs and people have some many different reasons for blogging.

I try to respond to comments and try not to feel guilty when I don't- because there is a reason for not replying too. Sometimes the less said the better ;)

I think this site is different from the Blogger site for example- here we have a sense of community and there is much more socialising going on compared with other sites , I feel.

I love my and appreciate my bloggety friends, even those who don't blog very often .

I'm always touched whenever somebody takes the time to read my blog or post a comment. It's a great gift when somebody spends their time reading what we have written. :)

An interesting question! For me, it is someone who combines interesting (and that means a lot of different things) posts with a social responsibility. I don't seem much point in blogging if there's no social interaction. It is often the amount of effort that a person makes replying to comments and commenting on other people's posts that (to me) indicate a person's real personality and manners.

I don't know what makes a good blogger.

I've only been here a matter of days.

But when I find out I'll try hard to be one.
