Just when I thought....

by tylluanpenry @ Thursday, 10. Jul, 2008 - 23:15:44

Just when I thought my book was almost finished, I discover some other things I want to put in it.... this means revising a few chapters yet again. It's awfully tempting to simply leave it as it is (it's a huge book anyway) but then I feel I'd be cheating.

Researching a book is an endless task sometimes, but I've promised myself these will be the last additions. It's got to finish somewhere!

So it's back to the grind - and apologies for not being around much these last few days...

it's a tough task but you have to be happy with the outcome, so you're doing the right thing.

:) take your time.

The only thing is you cannot aim for perfection so at some point you will have to draw the line and stop tweaking and publish.

Trust that you will know when it's time to finish.
Perhaps by the next full moon .. or the next ?
Harvest time :)

Was thinking yesterday how you were getting on with your book. Bought a few more books on the Craft but definately want to buy yours as well when it's published.

You are bumping into the 80/20 rule: except in this case it's the last few percent that are taking the time.

Like you, I tend to spend endless time tweaking my writing, when I should probably say "OK, that's good enough". I find it hard to stop when I know there are one or two things I could do just a bit better - easy to fix in an online publication - but with a printed book, you just have the one shot.

Queen Mab and Lois have some fair points. It's one thing to refine/edit it's another thing to keep adding. You really do have to steel yourself and draw the line.

Unlike a thesis, you don't have to pare your opus down, though that is a useful, though sometimes uncomfortable discipline to experience.

You also have another option and that is to think about publishing a sequel. Such an enterprise would give you loads of scope for expansion.
