Have you ever visited a fortune teller?

At the moment I am up to my eyeballs in work... not that I mind of course, because I love writing (and talking!) but there never seem to be enough hours in the day.

I mentioned a little while ago that I did some Rune Readings up in Hay in Adele's lovely shop, Spellbound. Some people who came for a reading already knew a bit about the runes while for others it was a completely new experience. But I was just wondering - has anyone here ever had their fortune told? And if so, was it with cards, tea leaves, crystal ball, tarot etc.?

Was it a good experience, bad or indifferent?

i had my fortune told whilst on honeymoon with my first wife...i don't think any of it came true, in fact, i wish that prophetess has warned me to scarper from the woman i'd just got shackled to.

  I think it's best to be open minded - some fortune tellers are better than others.

I have never done so but if I could find someone trustworthy would love to just once.

I was going to say No , then remembered that , in the 70's , a friend of my schoolfriend's Dad once 'read my palm' ~ I do'nt recall much of what he said , except that I was likely to have just one significant romance in my life , so if that was my 'ex' . . .
I think that most of such people who charge for their services just tell people what they think they want to hear , though I'd trust you , however , if someone really could see my future , would I really want to know , and , if they 'saw' something distressing , would they really want to tell me ?
I'd still like to see a recommended medium , but I'm not sure about 'fortune tellers' ,

  Yes, there is a distinction between mediums and 'fortune tellers'. I used to read palms when I was young, it was the first type of divination I ever did.

  That sounds very intriguing.... I wonder whether she was holding back because she genuinely didn't know or whether because she chose not to tell?

    I was not sure she did look confused or puzzled for a moment. I think I was reading her as much as she was me.

I don't really subscribe to that stuff but....

When we were in Hong Kong about 8 years ago, we went to the night market, Moff was 13 and she asked me if she could have her fortune told. I pointed to a lady who was telling fortunes and all the people who were coming away were smiling. Moff went over to her, the lady looked anxious and shook her head. We went away thinking perhaps she refused because of the language barrier. 5 days later we were passengers in a vehicle that was involved in a terrible and fatal accident, we were lucky to walk away with just bruises.

Afterwards Moff and I wondered WHY she refused to talk to us. Today I am still wondering. Co-incidence or something more?

  That's an amazing story! Clearly the fortune teller didn't feel able to lie to you and didn't want to scare you.... unlike some who seem to delight in bearing bad news.
  
  Although I do believe in coincidence, I think the teller must have been aware of something about to happen to you. Thank goodness you were all unharmed.

    Something about that incident made me think she was genuine. She clearly did not want to take our money in exchange for bad news either.

I've had loads of readings , tarot mainly and channelling sessions, none of them scary at all. They mostly confirmed what I already knew.

One medium, Keith , at the London College of Psychic studies was especially good. During the session I also " saw" a person and when I described this to him he said that it was his German guide.

  I'm glad all your experiences have been good ones, Mira. And as you say, they mostly do confirmed what one already knows. Of course, it's no less impressive that a total stranger with a crystal ball or pack of cards is able to pick up on this.
  
  I think the real value of these readings is that they help bring things into focus for the questioner.

I was bought up by a spiritualist mum, i can honestly say there are good and bad when coming to having readings or as some put it fortune telling.

I remember one time we were going to move house, the clairvoyant said if we moved we would be jumping out the frying pan into the fire, having no idea what he ment mum let it go as being a bad move. Month or so later there was a fire at the house we were going to move to, children and wife escaped but the man died helping them out, it was caused by an electrical fault.

Another time a clairvoyant told my mum to expect a surprise, later that week a knock on the door, our friends daughter holding a huge pot of curry saying surprise, mums made too much curry lol.

Last time i went for a reading i was told to follow the North star, wasnt sure what the guy ment till one day i was on my way to Plymouth. We were supposed to be moving there. I had a job in line and on the Plymouth council logo was the north star )(who i would have been employed by had it all worked out). He told me if i came off that path id be in danger, well Tylluan i told you a little of what happend to me just before witchfest where i was put in danger. If id focused on that and let it beat me then yes maybe i would have ended up quite ill from it all, but since our chat, support from the wonderful friends iv made here in Wales and a new start in my new place (still in Wales) soon i feel all is going to be good and im so positive again.

The other day my daughter was off school, i have some ogham cards, we read each others cards and it was so true. Every card came up with new direction, changes and for her a huge imput on her spiritual pathway. I use the cards for direction and guidance only, i also use divination with a crystal pendant which also told me the house move would be a real positive move and a happy one. Im trusting that guidance and feel confident its going to work for me.

Yes i do believe in fortune telling/clairvoyance/divination etc. Its played an important part in my life since my teens.

I have had my tarot's read for years by a old romany lady...Who later,taught me how to read them. I have done several reading's and be told that I was fairly accurate. It's not something that is easy to do..well for me anyway !

I have also visited several medium's..Amazing expierence. xx

  The tarot is an amazing tool for divination, and you're lucky to have had someone to teach you. So many people just rely on books or the internet. When you work with someone who actually reads them, you get a totally different perspective.

      I can read them for myself when I'm really relaxed but otherwise, like you, I find them very draining.

I read my own tarot and runes every 3 months.. much of it is valuable guidance.
But i use my intuitive..ignore it and plans turn to mush

I have had a reading by someone which was not so good

I've had all types of readings. Some have been good, others aweful! However, I have found one man who I go to every 2 years; he reads aura's past/present/future and is utterly fantastic!

I had a good reading several years ago and she gave personal info to me that were not broad spectrum, it was a psychometry (SP) reading with the jewellery. I did wonder about having a tarot reading done locally but am not prepared to pay £30. I dable with the cards myself just for me. The self proclaimed King of the Witches lives here, Kevin Carlyon, but have heard bad things about him over the years...do you know of him?

  Psychometry is a fascinating subject in its own right. £30 sounds an awful lot to pay for a tarot reading. When I do a rune reading I just ask for £3 which is purely to cover my time and nothing more.

I visited a psychic many years ago who accurately predicted I would get married within 2 years. As I was single and happy at the time I thought little of it. I did get married within 2 years though, and she mentioned a few other things that happened too. When she opened the door she said;
'when I spoke to you on the phone, the date 1st April came to me'.
That's my birthday!

About 3 months ago I went to a psychic living nearby. I was disappointed. She chatted too much and gave some names that meant nothing while she was fishing around trying to get a name I could say yes to. I paid £30 which I regret now, I wouldn't mind paying that to someone genuine, but she just blagged her way through the reading. I was surprised as I think she was psychic, but maybe she wasn't on form that day.

Rarely when I do a reading I use Caitlin Matthews Celtic Book of the Dead cards. They are different to the Tarot, each card symbolizes a different 'island' which you land on during a journey. They are beautiful cards which help focus the mind into the psychic space.
